Thoughts on Apple TV

Apple TV. I’ll get one eventually, but in the meantime, I would like to share my thoughts on what the future of this product might hold.

The Apple TV is somewhat revolutionary, albeit some of its functionality is a little late, and all around something good for Apple and consumers.  But it strikes to me that this just might be where Apple might have failed.

You see, Apple has what it needs for this to be something greater, but they don’t seem to have everything under the hood just right yet.

What I’m talking about is a true Apple TV.  A flat screen (plasma?) television that has what we know of Apple TV today with DVR functionality.

I’m talking a 34” to 50” (or more?) wide screen television, that can record ATSC TV like Tivo, Play your iTunes music, television shows, movies, podcasts, do it in HD, with 5.1 surround sound, can connect wirelessly or over an ethernet cable, connect with your iPod, and maybe more.

Some of the functionality is already here.  Take LG’s flat panels for instance, some of them have a 160GB hard drive built in that can record TV.  Some concepts of TVs are having ethernet jacks built in so it can connect to a networked computer.

Personally, I think they want people to get excited about what they have now. It’s just a snack that prepares you for the full course meal.
